Who Should Choose Plasma Over Laser?

That all depends on your cutting needs. Plasma can cut thicker material (up to 3¼” of mild steel) and has a sweet spot at around the 1” to 1½” range. The trade off, of course, is that plasma tables have a more jagged cut than lasers, with a kerf width of about 10 times greater. So if you need clean cuts above all else, go with a CI laser.

But if you have thicker material that doesn’t require a tight tolerance (maybe, for example, you’re cutting a part that is not necessarily going into another part), or your part is simple by design, plasma is the way to go. Plus, the CPX300 High Definition Plasma Table brings increased production capacity, speed and consumable life compared to its plasma counterparts. Oh, and we should also mention it can be about a tenth of the cost of a top-of-the-line laser cutter.

Lasers are, obviously, a light beam source whereas plasma is a gas that’s ignited by electricity. Each technology brings a specific kerf width. On a laser, your cutting area can be very precise, holding tolerances in the thousandths, but with a plasma table, you’re cutting with a wider sword. We like to describe it as a lightning bolt: remarkable cutting power, but more turbulent and not as clean. To harness the power of that lightning bolt, you need high definition.
